Transforming Indigenous Housing Systems up North: Wîkiwin Polytechnic Institute

The  Wîkiwin Polytechnic Institute will transform Indigenous housing systems up north.  Wîkiwin aims to address the housing needs of York Factory First Nation and the North by leveraging local resources and tradespeople to build homes while also fostering community growth. By creating a northern Indigenous housing ecosystem with builders, plumbers, carpenters, architects, engineers and trades educators to build capacity, Wikiwin is a gamechanger.  Wikiwin integrates housing with social, educational and economic goals, to make housing  heal and enrich the North.

Wikiwin is collaborating with the University of Manitoba. The solution will include a comprehensive education model that includes a co-created curriculum, training programs, housing designs and research on building materials. Focusing on sustainable construction techniques using local stone and wood, the initiative promises to employ residents, cut production costs and enhance housing quality. Additionally, the creation of a year-round trades workshop and a dormitory for student families will boost the local labour force and offer hope to York Factory First Nation and other Indigenous youth.

The Wikiwin Program through KDC was one of fifteen recipients of CMHC Housing Supply Challenge in a national competition of 187 entrants.
